‘Puzhukku’ is a traditional dish prepared by boiling tuberous vegetables like tapioca, yam, purple yam, colocasia or unripe fruits like jackfruit or banana along with coconut and other spices. In some preparations, legumes are also added.
“Chakka” is the Malayalam word for Jackfruit. And, “Chakka Puzhukk” is common puzhukku preparation using unripe jackfruit during its season. It is often served as tea time snack, but it is also served as a side dish for the rice meal. Chakka Puzhukku with hot black tea is a heavenly combination. Must try for all food lovers!
Ingredients
- Unripe Jackfruit – 1kg, cleaned and cut into pieces
- Grated Coconut – 1 cup
- Whole Black pepper – 1 and 1/2 tsp
- Garlic cloves – 4 to 5, large
- Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
- Shallots – 10 to 15, sliced
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Dry red chillies – 3
- Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
- Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
- Salt – As per taste
Method
- Make a coarse paste by grinding together coconut, black pepper, garlic, turmeric, and salt.
- In a thick bottom vessel, add the unripe jackfruit, coconut mixture, water and extra salt if needed. Close the lid and cook well.
- Once cooked, open the lid and give it a good stir.
- In a kadai, heat some coconut oil and add mustard seeds.
- Add sliced shallots and fry till it turns translucent.
- Add dry red chillies and curry leaves.
- When the shallots start turning brown, add the cooked jackfruit and mix thoroughly.
- Serve with tea as a snack. Or, serve with rice as a side dish.
